Why DarkMatter exists
A lot of VPN marketing asks you to take a great deal on trust: very large claims, vague promises about privacy, and very little about who is behind the service or what they can actually see. We started DarkMatter because we think a privacy product should work the other way round.
DarkMatter is for people who want a private, straightforward connection on the devices they already use, and who want to know exactly what they are paying for. Where we have a choice between saying something impressive and saying something true, we say the true thing, even when it is less exciting.
Who we are
DarkMatter VPN is run by Darkmatter VPN LTD, a UK company. Our terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and UK law applies to the account, billing and support records we hold about you. When you pay us, email us or open a support ticket, you are dealing with us directly.
How the service is put together
The most useful thing we can tell you about DarkMatter is who does what.
- We run the parts you deal with. Your account, your billing and your support are ours, including the website and account area where you manage your subscription.
- Our network partner runs the servers. The VPN network itself, meaning the servers your traffic passes through, is operated by our network partner, whose service we provide under the DarkMatter name.
- You always know which half is which. We hold the information that identifies you as a customer. The network carries your connections. Neither of us holds the whole picture.
We see this as a strength, not a compromise. Running a large, global server network is a specialist job. Working with a partner who does that lets us put our effort into the parts of the service you actually touch: a clear account area, straightforward billing, careful account security and honest answers. It also means your browsing never passes through DarkMatter’s own systems, so we can’t produce it, sell it or lose it. The Trust Centre sets out both halves in detail.
What we stand for
- Every feature on every plan. Basic protection is never a paid upgrade. The only choice you make is how long to commit for. See what every plan includes.
- Clear about what we hold. DarkMatter’s own systems don’t receive the websites you visit, your DNS queries or the contents of your traffic. We do hold the account and billing details needed to run your subscription. See exactly what we hold.
- Careful with the parts that are ours. Your account uses server-side sessions, re-authentication for sensitive actions and rate limiting, and two-factor authentication is available on every account. Read how we secure your account.
- Card details kept out of our systems. You enter card details into our payment providers’ hosted fields, so your card number never reaches our servers. Read how payments work.
- Straight about what we haven’t done. Our own systems have not been independently audited, and we won’t claim an audit we haven’t had. See what we haven’t done.
- Your data, your decision. You can download a copy of your account data, or ask us to close your account, from the account area. See your data rights in practice.
- Check it yourself. We would rather you test than trust. Our IP checker and WebRTC leak test show what your connection reveals, with or without DarkMatter.
How we make money
We make money one way: subscriptions. You pay for a plan, and that pays for the network, our team and the systems that run your account. We don’t sell advertising, and we don’t sell or rent your personal data to anyone.
That also shapes how we sell. There are no tiers or add-ons, renewal prices are shown before you pay, and your first purchase on this website is covered by our money-back guarantee. The refund policy has the full terms, including what happens at renewal.
What we won’t do
- We won’t quote figures we can’t source. The server and country numbers we publish describe the network DarkMatter runs on, and we say so.
- We won’t promise that a particular website or streaming service will work. Each service decides for itself whether to allow VPN connections.
- We won’t show reviews, ratings or badges we can’t stand behind.
- We won’t tell you a VPN makes you invisible. It encrypts your connection and hides your IP address from the sites you visit, but sites you sign in to still know it’s you.
